Super Social Thought-Tech's RICK RUSCH says a survey by the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association conducted by BIGinsight, shows that 173 million people will watch the Super Bowl.
According to the survey, grocery stores (among many others) can expect to see their share of Super Bowl-related spending as sports fans head out to buy food and beverages. With over 71% of sales going to purchase food and beverages (most likely brewski's...wink, wink) grocers have much to gain by marketing to Super Bowl-minded consumers. Some grocers use traditional tactics such as loading endcaps with chips, dips, etc. But others are a bit more creative.
Take Gordy's County Market, with seven locations in central Wisconsin, for example. Their Facebook page reads, "Gordy's Fans...here's your chance to win a $25 Gift Card from Gordy's. Here's what you need to do. The Guru placed names (either first or last) of players, or those closely associated with both the Giants and the Patriots in his commercial...the first person to name all of them (must have first and last name) will win the prize. Good luck!"
Rusch met Matt, the Gordy's Guru, (he's the social media and marketing guy for Gordy's) via phone for an article he was writing. When Rusch heard about this promotion, he thought he'd nailed it.
Check out the video on Gordy's Facebook page. Oh, and feel free to "Like" Gordy's. The Guru would love it.

Social Media - It's a Dialog Morning News Beat reports the message to the FMI Winter Conference was that social media demographics are changing, and quickly - 40% were ages 18-34 and 45% were older than 35. It's estimated that in 2013 the user base shift older with 50% being 35+. Shoppers will use social media to make decisions on products, locations and follow recommendations. "Social media is not a marketing channel, it is a communications channel," said Spencer. "It is not a monolog.. It is a dialog."
