Thank You

Thank you to all the retailers that took the time to e-mail and call their legislator on the minimum wage increase.

There were some very thoughtful and heartfelt comments, including:

“By slapping us with new minimum wages every year, you are being unfair to those who have put in years of service and now will be making close to, if not the same as, the newby off the street. The indexing of the minimum wage rate will throw a huge wrench in the growth of jobs, and limit the job opportunities for skilled workers. I won't be able to survive beyond 2011. THINK OF US!!”

Another retailer vented to his legislator saying,

“Proposed minimum wage increases should 'see the light of day' in the legislative process, rather than being forced on small business by bureaucrats that quite frankly don't have a clue! I am dumbfounded to think that the State Legislature is even considering a minimum wage change in light of the fact that the federal minimum wage is already increasing by over 10% in just over one month. Now the Democrats want to raise the minimum wage even further, and want to build in annual increases!  Doesn't anyone in Madison know that we are in the midst of a recession, and that many small businesses are fighting for their very existence?”

One grocer highlighted the minor affect by saying,

“We already pay higher than the minimum wage for our adult work force and the minimum wage will affect the student part of our workforce which is not what I believe the goal is, but that is what the result will be. Lastly, why does the Legislature want to put Wisconsin Businesses at a competitive disadvantage with surrounding States?”

Finally, from another retailer,

“In this economy my sales are trending down and all of my costs keep going up. We are especially seeing a negative trend in Janesville with the closing of the GM plant. The minimum wage increase has a double cost increase effect because when you increase the minimum wage it puts pressure on the middle and upper wages to keep pace with these increases.”

Just ask us: Why do some stores refuse Internet coupons?

Reprinted with permission from the June 22, 2009 Wisconsin State Journal

Q: What makes Internet coupons different from those in the newspaper, and which area stores do not accept Internet coupons?

A: At least three area stores do not accept Internet coupons — Woodman’s, Millers & Sons Super Market in Verona and Pierce’s Northside Market in Madison. Others, like the Piggly Wiggly in Waunakee, accept some Internet coupons with some restrictions.

About 90 percent of grocery coupons come from the glossy inserts in newspapers and magazines, but Charles Brown, vice president of marketing for nchmarketing.com, said coupons printed from the Internet are a small but rapidly growing source.

The problem: A number of counterfeit coupons are currently being circulated on the Internet, according to the nonprofit Coupon Information Corp.(www.cents-off.com). This is a criminal offense that can be investigated and prosecuted by federal, state or local law enforcement authorities.

Counterfeit coupons were rare prior to 2001, but the Internet boosted activity. Brandon Scholz, president of the Wisconsin Grocers Association, said consumers should be smart. "A good rule of thumb for consumers to determine whether or not an Internet coupon is legit is whether or not it seems reasonable," he said. "If a coupon is too good of a deal, chances are it’s a fake.

"Coupons tend to be less than a dollar, so if someone finds a coupon for $5 or $10 or for a free product with a high retail cost, it’s probably a fake."
