Daniels Sentry Walworth Certified as a ‘Green Grocer’

Sixth in state to be certified by the Green Grocer Program

With state and national leaders discussing climate change measures, the Daniels Walworth Sentry is the sixth grocery store in the state to achieve the ‘Green Grocer’ certification and will reduce CO2 emissions by 108,000 pounds next year and test innovative induction outdoor lighting.

The ‘Green Grocer’ program assists grocery stores in achieving energy efficiency, sustainability and environmental standards. The pilot program, offered by the WGA in the Wisconsin Power and Light (WPL) service area, is administered by Better Environmental Solutions, a Madison-based energy consulting firm. The ‘Green Grocers’ program also receives energy efficiency and conservation program, technology and incentive support from WPL.

1Daniels Sentry changed 49 459-watt metal halide parking lot lights to 49 153-watt induction fluorescent lights, reducing energy use 66%.

We are honored to be one of the first grocery stores in Wisconsin to be Green Grocer certified,” said TERRY DANIELS, owner of Daniels Sentry.  “We upgraded our parking lot lights to reduce our costs and carbon emissions and will save $5,000 per year in energy costs.”

The Daniels Sentry upgrades will save 60,000 kWh of energy annually, $5,000 on the electric bill, 15 KW of electricity demand, 108,000 pounds of CO2, 335 pounds of SO2, and 153 pounds of NOX annually. Click to see photos of the announcement.

5 Star Honor   IGA USA announced that several Wisconsin stores have been awarded the IGA Five Star honor for achievement in IGA’s Assessment Program.  Five Star is the highest level of recognition possible under the Assessment Program’s rigorous standards.  Receiving the honor were the Quality Foods stores in Wausau, Schofield, Rib Mountain and on West Grand Avenue in Wisconsin Rapids.

Best Bagger    More than 40 Wisconsin retailers, warehouse executives and retailers will be in Las Vegas next week to attend the National Grocers Association Annual Convention.  WGA’s MICHELLE KUSSOW will be attending as well to cheer on CLAIRE DITTMANN, the WGA’s best bagger from Metcalfe’s Markets, as she competes for the national title of National Best Bagger.  TIM & KEVIN METCALFE will also be rooting for their bagger to bring home a title and will be passing out t-shirts to all the Wisconsin folks that attend the bag-off contest.

New Store Announced   Whitefish Bay-based Sendik’s Food Markets plans to open a Sendik’s grocery store on Moorland Road in New Berlin.  The Sendik’s store will occupy the 30,000 sf space in the New Berlin Plaza shopping center that had been occupied by a shoe store which had also been a Kohl’s Food Store. Sendik’s Food Markets is the group that owns Sendik’s stores in Whitefish Bay, Germantown, Franklin, Elm Grove, Greenfield, Grafton, Mequon and Wauwatosa.

Tough on The Treasury    Wisconsin CONGRESSMAN PAUL RYAN called OBAMA TREASURY SECRETARY TIM GEITHNER on the carpet for not delivering a budget that helps to solve the country’s economic problems. Ryan said, “I brought up page 146 in your budget which is your S-1 budget totals (click here for pdf). When you take a look at this, I just find this amazing. You’ve got budget totals here, which by your own admission, from your own Budget Director, and you’re a smart guy, you’ve got smart economists over there, all of them say, that for the medium and long-run budget deficits have to get below 3% of GDP, yet this budget plan that you’re bringing to us doesn’t even get close to it.”

Stopping Retail Crime      The WGA’s MICHELLE KUSSOW testified on behalf of the Wisconsin Grocers Association this week at the Senate Judiciary Committee on the Organized Retail Crime bill (Assembly Bill 241).  The bill is co-sponsored by REPRESENTATIVE CHRIS DANOU (D-Trempealeau) and SENATOR LENA TAYLOR (D-Milwaukee) and is aimed at deterring organized retail thefts from occurring in Wisconsin.  Wisconsin has the highest single felony threshold in the country—meaning that thieves must steal more than $2500 worth of goods before they can be charged with a felony.  ORC is one of the issues on the agenda for attendees to discuss with their elected officials while at the WGA Grocers in the Capitol Day on February 16 and 17.
